Trees are an essential part of the eco system as they contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, conserving water, preserving soil and supporting wildlife. Deforestation is quickly becoming one of the greatest challenges our planet is facing and Uganda is not extraneous to this risk.
Unless something is done very ugently, at the present rate of deforestation, there will be no forests left in this country in 40 years’ time. Since the inception of our agro-forestry projects, over 50,000 indigenous tree species are planted every year in the Karamoja Region.
After a long process of experimentation, a number of species have been selected that are better adaptive to the harsh and unpredictable weather conditions of the areas (Acacia, Senegal, Acacia Polyacantha, Dovyalis Caffa etc.) our efforts alone cannot prevent the damages caused by human activities and we hope that many more people will join in this battle.
